Venus Raj: A “major major” disappointment or achievement?
Ma. Venus Raj, the 22-year old Bicolana who represented the Philippines in the recently concluded Ms. Universe Pageant 2010 in Las Vegas, deserves to be lauded for grabbing the 4th Runner Up spot. She may not have provided the smartest answer in a “major major” way but folks, let’s give her credit for the honor she brought to the country. Her achievement of bringing home a crown after a decade (since Miriam Quimbao’s victory as 1st Runner Up in 1999) far more outweighs her answer when asked during the Q & A portion, “What is one big mistake that you made in your life, and what did you do to make it right?”
Venus replied with confidence, “You know what, Sir, in my 22 years of existence, I can say that there’s nothing major, major problem that I’ve done in my life because I’m very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I’m here. Thank you, thank you so much!” she said.
As expected, people flooded the internet with negative criticisms about how the beauty queen answered the question which, some speculate, may have cost her the Ms. Universe crown. Fine. Enough said.
Venus achieved what many others failed to do in many years. Slamming her is such a shame.
Venus, being tough, chooses to laugh the side comments off. Cheers to another display of femme power. Kudos to you, Ms. Venus Raj!

There was nothing wrong with her answer except that her nervousness showed. Who wouldn’t be nervous in her shoes. Congrats to Venus for the win!

Ms Rochelle I loved her answer, and think she is a very confident young woman with nothing to be ashamed of. What is wrong with saying you haven’t made any big mistakes in your life? Now if they had asked what is something you can do to improve your life, and she said nothing, I might be concerned. We all always have room to grow. Many congrats to her.

I’m not trying to be harsh on her coz she made some people proud and I guess she deserves to be there in the top 5 but I was disappointed. I think she did not really try hard enough to pause and think out her thoughts…as if she’s trying to be evasive or playing safe. Nervousness or under pressure is not an excuse because all of them were subject to that condition. It’s just how they “carry through” and handle that stress during that moment, and I think Venus wasn’t prepared to do that nor she “exerted any effort” to come up with a relevant answer.
