Help! My blog is hacked!
I woke up this morning feeling energized to write a new entry on my Mom-Says blog. I checked my email and saw that I had two comments to approve but lo and behold when I tried to log in, I was greeted by a strange advertisement in a totally unfamiliar page that asked me to click on a link to make the page “work.” Helpless, I clicked on the link and it directed me to a totally different website.
I’m so pissed and frustrated! All the months that I worked for to achieve PR2 and decent traffic for that blog, now all wasted to hacking.
Has this ever happened to you? Were you able to restore your blog after getting hacked? I’ll be more than glad to hear from any well-meaning bloggers around who could share their views on hacking or how to restore a hacked blog. If you could recommend where to get help on this, I will definitely see it as a huge favor. A big big thank you in advance!

Thanks for checking, Eric. It’s okay now. I was able to get in and see a nasty long code encrypted on my html with all the letters that don’t make any sense and in the middle there’s this line that says “define(”_DECODER_PATH_”, TEMPLATEPATH.”/wp_include.bin”); //You can change this path to point to the decoder file in another location.”
I’ve removed it already and changed my password. Hopefully the hacker won’t bother me again. Sigh.

Rochelle I am so glad someone was able to help you. I know nothing about that stuff. I could not leave a comment on your mom blog still today.

Claire - Thank you, much appreciated!
Melissa - Thanks for the heads-up that the comment section of mom-says wasn’t working. Fixed it already. I wouldn’t have known if not for u. Thanks big time!

I can’t understand hackers. Are they really that cold hearted? They don’t receive any rewards for what they do. At least a thief gets something. They are just plain mean and evil. Glad you are back up and running.

Hi Rochelle,
That happened to one of my major blogs for three times, and then once on my minisite.
What I did is to restore it with the help of my husband who has the back up copy of it. Also, we changed the password into a more challenging one. It might be a little difficult memorizing a complicated password but it is all worth it.
Hope that would not happen to any of your blogs again.

Hi, glad you got your blog running again. I can’t tell which platform you use. Make sure you’re running the most updated version. A strong admin password is essential, even if you must store it in a text file somewhere, see https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm for a strong password generator.

I couldn’t help but notice, I know this is an old post, but just wanted to give you a few tips for you and others:
1) Always scan/protect your computer, this is where it all begins, if you get a virus or keylogger, all your data is at risk.
2) Most of the times, there are some plugins on wordpress that are vulnerable to zero-day attacks (just google it to find out more), so being up to date is safe.
3) Sometimes attacks can occur from websites, so just make sure to have your antivirus updated and enabled all the time to prevent any websites dropping behind-the-scenes attacks from your browser to your desktop.
_I hope this never happens again! Bye
